The Orton's on the Nile - 2005

Prologue

Prologue

Hans and Lotty were content. There luggage had already left and they were well on the way to the airport, their 'vorsprungdurktechnic' motor was purring smoothly and the autobahn was free running. Soon they would be on the way to Egypt, their carefully prepared monogrammed beach towels were packed last ready for first glimpse of the sun beds. A strange shadow passed over the windscreen and the radiator exploded steam in a giant fountain all over the bonnet. They would be late....

The express train from Kassel to Dusseldorf international airport was running smoothly and with great Teutonic precision, progressing relentlessly forward to connect with the scheduled flight to Luxor. A local football team and their wives/girlfriends were already discussing their plans for the holiday, the crack sunbed squad had been practicing all week and could capture the required 24 sun beds in less than 2 minutes. Likewise the women had platted and braided their armpits in order to get the best possible tan without shaving. It would be a good cruise. A shadow passed over the carriages and a cold breeze drifeted through the doorway. The train slowed and came to a gentle shuddering halt, A Mann haulage truck had broken down on the level crossing, there would be a delay......

The connecting flight from Fallingbostel was as smooth as twenty years pilot experience could make it, but then Lufthansa never had timetable problems. In just over twenty two minutes, Kurt, Willy, Hans and Gertrude would make their connecting flight to Luxor. The luggage would be transfered internally and their would be a breif passport check before they boarded their main flight. One week of cruising and a second of beach and hotel. Life was good. A motley looking dark grey bird flew too close to the air inlet and suffered the consequences. The pilot's instruments registered the change in pitch and that the engine was running hotter than permitted, they would have to land at Hannover, regulations required it.

Köln airport was running a tight schedule, it was the summer months and many of the cities businessmen, as well as those from nearby Bonn were all busy flying around the world in search of a place in the sun. Flight KN231 was no exception. Baggage was loaded the regulation twenty minutes before passengers were allowed on and it was time for the crew to perform final checks as the boarding cards were checked ready for take off. The captain flipped the seat belt sign and started taxing out towards the runway. A large beetle flew into the flightdeck window and it started to rain. The passengers gave a hearty laugh, their friends would have yet another downpour to endure while they were in the sun. The plane tilted as the captain made a turn and the co-pilot pointed to the instruments. Hydraulic fluid was leaking and one set of wheels was slowly sinking into its housing, there would be a delay......

Four thousand miles away Achmed made a final inspection of the room. All looked well, but there were still some finishing touches needed to complete the effect. He glanced slowly round the cabin and opened the door to the shower. He bent and tugged gently at the bottom corner of the wall, nodded once and return to the main cabin. He smiled with a glint in his eye and bent down to adjust the fridge door. Yes everything was just right, it had to be, they would be comming soon. Turning swiftly he closed the cabin door behind him and went up to serve the Dutch. Everything was ready.......
